• Corporations use blogs as a way of communicating directly with customers without having to use the media as an intermediary
  • Blogs can be personal blogs about one's one personal experiences and day-to-day life (Rettberg 9), filter blogs, which could solely post links to other things online (Rettberg 12), and topic-driven blogs which focus on one particular thing, much like we are doing in this class (Rettberg 15-16).
  • Blogs can also be classified into specific types of narrative blogs: fragmented (told in brief short stories), (Rettberg 111), goal-oriented, in which the blogger has a purpose in mind that they are trying to accomplish (Rettberg 113), and on-going, in which the reader of the blog should be able to tell that there will be an end to the blog eventually and at the conclusion, we will be able to go back the review the entire thing (Rettberg 115).
  • Personal Blogs:
    • Anonymous - Liberates the writer, can write about illegal activities, share greater details; hard to tell if it is true
    • Signed
  • Opinion Blogs
  • Topic-driven blogs: many blogs do not focus on the writer's different interests, but focus on one particular topic, such as sports or food, the topic could be ANYTHING, the topics of topic-driven blogs are very diverse and unending.
    • "All these topic-centered blogs share newly discovered ideas and information with their readers, usually providing links to more information. Thus they provide a filter to the vast amounts of news, information and conversations on the Web." (Rettberg 15)
      • This coincides with what we spoke about in class- that is, the idea of finding a community to speak to with your blog. In this case, the blogger is the member of a community, but takes a leadership role in sifting through vast amounts of content in order to provide his or her community with content of interest.
    • Rettberg (16) also suggests that topic driven blogs are more oriented towards discussion.

Video blogging or vlogging
  • Is a blog that uses video as a medium.
  • Entries are usually embedded videos with supplemental text or other multimedia.
